IRS extension form 4868 is a free government form you can fill out and get six months extra to file your taxes.  You can fill it out on your computer, print it and mail it to the IRS and get more time to file but not more time to pay.

There are two ways to file the IRS extension form but whichever way you choose, form 4868 is due when taxes are due.  This is generally April 15 for most taxpayers.  For corporations, the deadline for the IRS extension form is March 15.

The first way to file the IRS extension form is to use the IRS e-file system.  This allows you to file the form online and pay online with your computer.  You have to already be signed up with an IRS e-file account, however.

The second way to file for the extension is to fill out the form on your computer using the link above.  This is a pdf form, which you fill out and then print from home.  Then mail it in to the IRS with a check for any taxes that may be due.  You can also just print out the paper IRS extension form at the same web location and fill it out by hand.

Good news: there is a quick and easy way to get an IRS extension!  This grants you extra time to do your taxes if you don’t have time to do them by the due date.

The first thing to know is that although the IRS extension gives you more time to file your taxes, it doesn’t actually give you more time to pay your taxes.  Therefore, if you owe taxes, you’ll end up paying a little interest and even in some cases some penalties.

If you are applying for an IRS extension simply because you can’t pay the amount owed on your tax return, it’s for the wrong reasons and filing for the extension won’t help you.

Instead, if you owe taxes but can’t pay them, file the tax return and pay as much as you can.  The IRS will send you a bill for the rest.

IRS form 4868 will grant you an automatic six-month IRS extension of time to file.  That’s for individuals filing their Federal taxes.  The due date for the IRS extension of time to file is April 15, or whenever your taxes are due.  For individuals, it’s April 15.
